Starr squeezed the square face on her watch between thumb and forefinger. A tiny light appeared in the corners, illuminating the time. It was almost midnight. She released the miniscule button, and the light died. She wondered if Lily and Dylan were waiting for her to return. It was late, and she was far too tired to have a long discussion.

When she’d driven off, she hadn’t known where she would go. Familiar roads took her to school. The building was closed, so she circled around to the senior eating area and automatically headed for her usual table. At the last second, she turned left instead of right and sat in Bex’s chair. The small, rebellious gesture was enough to lift her spirits.

It was eerie sitting outside the school at night without another soul in sight. Soft sounds teased her ears. In the distance, ocean waves rolled in at regular intervals. A dog barked, but she could barely hear it. There was another sound, too. It took her a few seconds to realize it was the sound of footsteps. They grew louder. Someone was headed straight for her. Starr looked around, but it was nearly impossible to see anything in the inky darkness. She squinted. Should she duck under the table or sit very still? Before she could make a decision, a deep voice broke through the quiet.

“Is this what you do in your free time?” The accent was unmistakable. It was Ryder Hawke. The strange boy must have had the vision of a cat to have zeroed in on her in the darkness. Hovering over her, he said, “You come here at night, sit at our table, and pretend to be one of us? Kind of pathetic, don’t you think?”

The last time she’d seen him, he’d been playing freaky magic games with his best friend. Was he dangerous? Starr sat up straighter and erased every trace of fear from her face. No matter what, she wasn’t going to let him know she was afraid of him.

“It’s dark,” she said. “I didn’t realize I was sitting at your stupid table. What are you doing at school in the middle of the night, anyway?”

He pulled up a chair and straddled it. Now she could see his facial features. They tightened with what seemed to be intense dislike. He looked almost disgusted whenever his gaze touched upon her.

“Bex dragged me here,” he said. “She’s busy doing artwork on one of the walls, and I got bored.”

“She’s putting up graffiti?”

“I didn’t say that.” He raised a bottle to his lips and took a drink before tilting it in her direction, silently offering her a taste.

She shook her head.

He added, “Where’s the bloke you usually hang with? Why isn’t he with you?”

“You mean Dylan? He has a name, you know.”

The disgusted look returned in full force. “Yeah, but I don’t like to say it. The sound of it makes me want to smash my fist into something.”

“Gee, I wonder why,” she said sarcastically.

“I know why. That jerk used to make fun of me before I joined the It Squad.
